Massachusetts Cultural Council Creative Schools Puppetry Residency Program is wrapping up at South Street and McKay Campus Elementary Schools.  Children and grades 3 and 4 created their own puppets based on a character in a story.  Each class focused on a different type of puppet.  Some built marionettes, rod puppets, shadow puppets for Toy Theater and hand puppets. They also designed and painted the Puppet Theater and sets.  Children wrote their own scripts, learned how to manipulate the puppet and bring it to life with dramatic vocal expression. Artist-in-Residence C.M. Judge at 21st Century After School Centers. As a result of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant received by the Fitchburg Cultural Alliance, artist Catherine M. Judge will take up residency at three of our 21st Century after school centers starting March 27th through June 9th.  Under the director of C.M. Judge, 40-45 middle school studentsws will have the chance to create a piece of public art that will be premiered at Riverfront Park at the Kidz Partypalooza event, July 22, 2006.  The title of the project is:  Making Art Together: A Celebration of Environmental Sculpture!  Students will celebrate space, light, form, color and sound.  Imagine creating a large-scale inflatable sculpture for our community – so large a sculpture you can walk inside it!

“A World in Motion” Science and Engineering Pilot program for selected 5th grade students will take place during the school day for eight weeks starting the end of March and will be taught by two highly qualified science educators hired specifically for this project. The primary goal for this project is to provide challenging and engaging learning experiences in science, math and technology through hands-on activities around scientific principles such as gravity, acceleration, inertia and resistance. Students are presented with a design problem for building a vehicle. In cooperative teams, students gather and synthesize information; design and test a prototype design; and prepare a presentation of their design ideas. View the scrapbook.
