"After School Style"
The “after school style” is one that is structured but at the same time flexible to meet the needs of the students and provides time for mentoring and building adult and peer relationships. We want students in the after school program to feel they are part of a club where they can try new things, make new friends and be respected for who they are. Students will receive the support they need to with their homework, develop effective habits of mind and learn how to solve a problem. We want students to feel good about themselves through achievement and completing a task.
21st Century Scholars is also a creative place for creative minds. “I’m bored” is not an expression we want to hear. Many children never learn to play chess or scrabble at home. But in the after school program they get to experience the joy of playing challenging games with others. Life skills that many of us were taught as children by our families are not true for many children today. Children need help in making connections between sewing and math, or drawing and geometry, or science and cooking. Embedding academics into the activities give the child a richer and more in-depth learning experience. However, children need explanations in very concrete terms combined with hands-on experiences to internalize the learning for greater understanding. This approach reaches students of different learning styles and ability levels when they are engaged in challenging, creative, and open-ended activities that promote self-expression, personal reflection and critical thinking.
